Preparing to Join the Church
The Catholic Church welcomes new members into the Church all the time and provides a special process of preparation.
Before committing themselves to membership of the Church it is important for people to come to Church on Sundays so that they can see for themselves, find out what happens at Mass and get a sense of the atmosphere.
If you get to the stage of wanting to enquire further, ring one of the contact numbers on the left of this window and we will arrange for you to talk with someone informally.
This is designed to ensure that at each stage an enquirer is free of pressure to continue and can take time out when you wish.
That is not because the Church is reluctant to welcome you, it is because it is a big deal to become a committed follower of Jesus Christ.
During the preparation time, we go through the teaching of Jesus Christ and how it is realised in the Catholic Church but will become clear that this is not just a matter of learning, it also covers the practice of prayer which entails faith in the person of Jesus which will have an influence on your our everyday life, not in a restrictive sense, but by providing a deeper meaning and value to everything in your life.
To reassure you, we make it a rule that whatever is said in the group meetings will be kept confidential. Without this safeguard the members of the group have to be more careful about expressing personal insights which can be so valuable for everyone.
Jesus promised:
“When two or three meet together in my name, I shall be there among you” which is why working together in a group is so effective and has real spiritual value.
As time goes on enquirers realise that they need to make the decision that ‘This is not for me’ or to accept that the teaching of Jesus is the truth. This decision depends on the answers to other questions such as ‘How will this affect me?’ ‘How is it going to affect my family and my friends?’ ‘What are they going to say?’ ‘Will I lose any friends?’
This is when the sponsor shows his/her real value in being there to listen and discuss the pros and cons of the choice to be made. But in the end only the persons themselves can decide.
